The Suns superstar and Longhorns legend took to Twitter following Monday’s news to shout out Terry, who was named the 26th coach in program history after a successful 2022–23 campaign.
Durant tweeted, “well deserved coach @RodneyTerry,” in response to a report noting the 55-year-old coach was set to earn a five-year contract worth $15.3 million.
As arguably the most decorated Longhorn ever, Durant made headlines numerous times in recent months after voicing his support for Terry since he took over in early January. Most recently, the 13-time All-Star praised the Longhorns’s play under Terry prior to their eventual Sweet 16 victory over Xavier on March 24—Texas’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2008.
“As [He] has led this team on and off the court as well as anyone could have expected. To see them in the Sweet 16 with as a good a shot to win the national championship as anyone is a testament to the amazing job he’s done,” Durant said, via Boardroom.
Terry took over as the Longhorns’ interim head coach after Texas fired Chris Beard weeks after a domestic violence arrest. He went on to lead Texas to a Big 12 tournament championship and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament, a run that ended Sunday night in the Elite Eight against No. 5 Miami in the Midwest Region final.
