John Gruden to face old friend Sean McVay in Raiders season opener

The Raiders have an extra day of preparation for their season opener. The team plays Monday night against the Rams.

There’s a ton of familiarity between the two teams.

Raiders fans know Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib while head coach John Gruden has deep knowledge of the Los Angeles coaching staff.

32-year-old Sean McVay is the current coach of the Rams and reigning coach of the year.

Gruden not only gave McVay his first job in the league as a receivers coach in Tampa but he’s also worked with McVay’s grandfather, former 49ers executive.

Gruden spoke about the dynamics in a press conference Wednesday.

“John McVay helped my dad,” Gruden explains. “I try to help any McVay I can. They’ve helped us throughout the years, we’re a really close family and got Sean out of Miami of Ohio – kind of in a secretarial role – to get him in the building. Next thing I know, he’s out there helping Joey Galloway and our receivers play better. He’s a great, young coach and a really great friend. I can’t wait to play against him.”
