His is a story of survival and perseverance — a Vietnam veteran delivered his message of hope Friday night in Bakersfield.
Retired Air Force Major Brian Shul was the guest speaker at the Minter Field Founders Day Banquet, at Hodel’s restaurant.
The pilot was shot down in Vietnam, and although badly burned he recovered and even soared to new heights.
“I spent a year in the hospital. They said you’re lucky to be alive, but you’ll never fly again,” Shul said.
“I’m living proof that all things are possible and you can overcome any obstacle in life. You never know what you can do until you try.”
Major Shul spent a year training to fly the SR-71. Friday night, he shared photos and stories of his adventures.
17’s Jim Scott was the emcee for the event.
