Bakersfield police have cleared the scene at Mercy Southwest Hospital. Roads will be re-opened by 12:30 a.m. police said. Mercy & Memorial Hospitals released the following statement:
At a press conference Wednesday night, Bakersfield police said there was not a shooting at Mercy Southwest Hospital Wednesday. Police said there was no evidence a shooting took place. Police said no victims were found.
Police said over 100 emergency personnel from agencies in the county responded to the call from the hospital just before 8 p.m.
The initial 911 call was made from the hospital, believed to be from a hospital employee, according to police. BPD says if the call turns out to be a hoax, criminal charges will be recommended, if they can figure out where it originated.
Police said officers were on scene within minutes of the call.
Bakersfield police said Old River Road remains closed by the hospital. Avoid the area.
Officers searching Mercy Hospital Southwest have not found any indication of a shooting, the Bakersfield Police Department said.
Nearly three hours after a “Code Black” active shooter alarm sealed the hospital campus, police had found no shooter, no victims, no shell casings and no bullet holes.
An army of heavily armed officers still were searching the campus, at Old River Road just west of Cal State Bakersfield as of 10:45 p.m.
Some patients had barricaded themselves in their rooms as police warned them to shelter in place.
Officers were busy with the search and had not called it off as of 10:45 — but they hadn’t found anything, either.
10:00 p.m. “No shots have been fired while emergency personnel have been on scene. No victims located & officers are still searching the hospital,” Bakersfield Police Department tweeted.
