UPDATE (7:01 p.m.): Rescue crews pulled two women to safety from the Kern River at Hart Park Tuesday evening.
Kern County sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and Bakersfield firefighters responded to the call at around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The Bakersfield Fire Department’s rescue boats were used for the rescue, bringing the women out of the water.
KCSO Lt. Bill Smallwood said the two women, who weren’t wearing life vests, were swimming in the river, but got caught in the current. Smallwood said they were able to reach an island in the river and stayed there until they were rescued.
The two women were not injured, officials said.
