Two people are dead following a semi crash on an exit ramp of I-5, according to California Highway Patrol.
Just after 3:30 a.m., Bakersfield CHP received a call of vehicle in the east runaway truck escape ramp on northbound I-5 south of Grapevine Road.
During the investigation, officers determined the 2007 Peterbilt semi, driven by a 42-year-old man, was traveling at a high speed when it entered the escape ramp.
The semi went past the gravel pit and collided into the side of the mountain, causing the trailer to collide with the cab, CHP reported.
The passenger, a 42-year-old woman, was ejected.
Both the driver and passenger died on scene, according to CHP.
In the initial investigation, it appears weather was not a factor in the collision, said CHP.
