A trial date is set for a civil case against a member of a prominent local family who hit and killed a woman on a bicycle last year.

The trial for John Giumarra III is set for Jan. 14. Giumarra struck 32-year-old Angela Holder as she rode her bicycle on Golden State Avenue near F Street. Police said he drove his SUV from the scene of the accident to a nearby service station, where he was stopped by police.

Tests at the time of the crash showed he had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit to drive.

Holder’s family is now suing Giumarra.

The trial is expected to last seven days, if it makes it that far. A settlement could happen before the January 2019 trial date.

Earlier this month, a judge sentenced Giumarra to 90 days custody through a work release program, five years probation and 100 hours of community service.
