It’s time once again to open your wallets and your purses to Give Big Kern.
May 1 is the third annual Give Big Kern Day. The day, planned by the Kern Community Foundation, is designed to bring all of Kern County together as one community, raising dollars and volunteer hours for local nonprofits through a 24-hour crowd-funding campaign.
More than 100 non-profits are participating.
One of them is the Boy and Girls Club of Kern County. You can give to help their summer day camp that promotes activities in science, technology engineering and math, sports, arts and gardening.

Throughout the day, all nine Rusty’s Pizza Parlor restaurants in Greater Bakersfield and Lamont will be donating $1 toward Give Big Kern for every sale of their Centennial Special Pizza topped with pepperoni, Canadian-style bacon, sausage and extra cheese. Girl Scouts of Central California South is hosting a drive-through “Raise the Roof with Coins for a Cause,” event. From 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. you can donate loose change at the Girl Scout Office located at 1831 Brundage Lane. An anonymous “Angel” will match however much Girl Scouts collects, up to $50,000.
Give Big Kern dessert special in the Stars Theatre Cafe. Guests who show proof of making a donation for Give Big Kern, will receive a complimentary dessert of their choosing, including the popular key lime pie. Stars Theatre is located at 1931 Chester Ave.
The Valley Fever Americas Foundation will be at Dagny’s Coffee Company on the corner of 20th and Eye Streets from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. For every cash, check, credit card donation, you will receive a Valley Fever fan.
Fairy Godmother Foundation is having a “Sweet Celebration of Giving” in appreciation of donors and volunteers. The sweet treat and punch event will be going on from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the 20th Street Cottage in Downtown Bakersfield.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m., join Kern Community Foundation and Give Big Kern participating nonprofits at Temblor Brewing Company, 3200 Buck Owens Blvd., in Bakersfield for the Give Big Kern After Party, where we will be watching the leader board on givebigkern.org to see which agencies are leading in the online fundraising effort.
The Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity will have a Give Big Kern celebration from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at its community center at 902 18th Street in Downtown Bakersfield, across the street from Cafe Smitten.
