Two men are behind bars after intentionally trying to run over a deputy and CHP officers in Northeast Bakersfield.

Just after 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, an on-duty Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputy was conducting a DUI traffic stop near Heritage Bible Church on Mt. Vernon Avenue. CHP arrived to assist.

While the deputy and officers were outside their vehicle, a separate car tried to run them over, according to KCSO. The car narrowly missed the law enforcement officers and crashed into Heritage Church building, KCSO says.

As a result of the incidence, KCSO arrested 19-year-old Jose Antonio Lopez and 19-year-old Miguel Gutierrez. Deputies located a rifle in the car, according to KCSO.

Both were booked on charges of attempted murder, participating in a gang, and possession of a firearm.

A third person got away on foot.
