A national study has found Bakersfield to be the best city in California to raise a family.

Apartment website Zumper drew from national statistics, basing its rankings on affordability and quality of life.

Out of 94 cities, Bakersfield ranked 19th in the country based on several indicators including household income, percentage of income spent on rent and monthly housing costs.

That information along with relative crime rates, commute times and school dropout rates made Bakersfield the highest ranked California city on the list.

Other California cities ranked in the top 50 include San Diego, San Jose, Anaheim, Santa Ana and Sacramento.

Rounding out the top five cities were:

  • Madison, Wisconsin
  • Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Lexington, Kentucky
