Stolen semi-truck leads to police pursuit, man drives truck into Kern River

UPDATE(May 4)– On Sat. May 2, at about 6:30 A.M. Bakersfield police officers responded to a report of a stolen semi-truck, taken from 4101 Jewett Ave.

Police said 36-year-old Matthew Myers stole a big rig from a truck yard and rammed a gate as he fled from the business. They were able to track the stolen semi-truck through a GPS location system and found it in the 1700 block of Golden State Avenue, where the suspect intentionally rammed the victim’s vehicle as he fled.

Officers located the stolen truck at around 8:07 a.m. near the intersection of 30th Street and M Street. Offices initiated an enforcement stop, but Myers failed to yield and led officers on a pursuit, said BPD.

Bakersfield police said the pursuit continued until the suspect drove the truck into the Kern River, on Round Mountain Road near Hart Park.

Myers then attempted to run away but was apprehended with the assistance of a Police K-9. He was arrested for vehicle theft, felony evading, grand theft, looting, assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and resisting arrest, said BPD.

Police said he was transported and booked into the Kern County jail.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – A man was arrested by Bakersfield police officers after stealing a semi-truck in Northeast Bakersfield, leading to a police pursuit Saturday morning. Police said the pursuit ended after the suspect drove the semi-truck into the Kern River.

The Bakersfield Police Department said at around 6:30 a.m., officers received a report of a man stealing a semi-truck in the 4000 block of Jewett ave.

According to BPD, the suspect drove through the gated fence and led to a police pursuit. The man drove out toward Round Mountain Road.  

That’s when the man drove into the Kern River, partially submerging the semi-truck, said police.

BPD arrested the suspect for several different charges.
