State now investigating Northwest Bakersfield daycare for alleged child abuse

News

A local daycare is now being investigated by the state for alleged child abuse.

Shannon Perkins, was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child, but the case was continued to next week.

Perkins has since bailed out of jail.

According to a search warrant, Perkins’ ex-boyfriend, who she lives with, provided the sheriff’s office video from their in-home surveillance system captured Thursday.

Investigators say Perkins is seen throwing an infant on the ground, slamming him on a couch, shaking the infant, choking him and violently slapping him on the back of the head three times.

Perkins runs Shannon’s Sweethearts Home Childcare out of her home in Northwest Bakersfield.

According to the state child care licensing division, Perkins is approved to care for up to eight children.

Workers with the California Department of Social Services were out at the facility on Thursday and confirmed there are currently no children at the daycare center.

The department is working with law enforcement on the case.
