An infant has died from whooping cough in San Bernardino County, state health officials said Tuesday.
The Department of Public Health said it is the first confirmed death in California from the disease since 2016.
State director of public health Dr. Karen Smith says this death serves as a grim reminder that whooping cough is always present in our communities.
Dr. Smith reminds everyone that immunizations are the first line of defense.
The CDC recommends that expectant mothers receive the whooping cough booster shot between 27 and 36 weeks of every pregnancy.
To avoid spreading the disease, Public Health also recommends immunizing babies as soon as possible.
