State fines Mercy Hospital for not following proper procedure

Mercy Hospital was slapped with its first penalty by the state health department.

The Department of Public Health announced a number of fines for hospitals around the state totally close to $400,000. 

The department says last year, Mercy Hospital did not follow proper protocol when caring for a patient putting them at risk.

The state found that the hospital left a surgical item inside a patient.

The hospital was fined more than $31,000.

In a statement, Mercy Hospital says they conducted an internal investigation and are working with the department to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
