SpaceX rocket launch causes confusion, panic Friday evening

A guiding light in the sky, lit up phones in the 17 News newsroom Friday evening.

It caused confusion, concern even panic for some who called in and messaged 17 News on Facebook and Twitter.

The commotion itself was SpaceX launching its Falcon 9 rocket out of Vandenberg Air Force Base Friday evening.

The rocket took off just after 5:25 p.m.

SpaceX launched 10 more Iridium voice and data relay satellites to orbit.

Friday’s launch was SpaceX’s 18th Falcon 9 mission this year — a record for the commercial launch company.

The launch was also the fifth time a Falcon 9 rocket flew with a previously used first stage booster.

Below is NBC News’ Facebook coverage of the launch Friday night.

Here’s a photo from Tonya Jacobsen of the rocket launch.
