Shooting in southwest Bakersfield leaves one man dead


It’s homicide 56 this year. Corey Jason Powers, 49, was shot at the intersection of Buena Vista and Harris Roads Tuesday, according to Kern County coroner.

And now, residents in a southwest Bakersfield community, fear for the safety of their neighborhood. 

“No this? It’s not normal. This is the first time this much police presence has been around,” said Mathew Covert a resident of the Encanto neighborhood in the southwest. 

Just after 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, Bakersfield Police Department responded to a call near the intersection of Buena Vista and Harris Roads.  

A man was found shot. 

“We do not have any suspect information at this time and we’re still in the preliminary stages of our investigation,” said Sgt. Daniel McAfee of the Bakersfield Police Department. 

Multiple neighbors reported seeing the alleged victim – the owner of this red Dodge Intrepid – broken down on the side of the road, where Harris turns into Pensinger. Working on his car alone they said – long before any shooting. 

According to BPD, the victim died of his injuries Tuesday. 

The intersection at Buena Vista and Harris was reopened Tuesday evening.
