The Board of Supervisors declared September as Disaster Preparedness Month in Kern County

Fire Chief Brian Marshall spoke about the proclamation during the board’s Tuesday morning meeting.

Marshall says Kern County will join an annual nationwide campaign to increase public awareness about the importance of individual and family preparedness.

“With so many disasters — obviously fires and floods but also a major power outage — It could affect people for weeks on end,” he said.”All of these disasters, people need to be ready. Not just wild land fire in urban facing areas, but right here in Downtown Bakersfield.”

The Kern County Fire Department has developed 10 PSAs to air in September promoting community safety.

County Fire is also hosting a preparedness event Saturday, Sept. 15 at Cal State Bakersfield. More details will be released about the event in the coming weeks.
