Yesterday was the last day at the Kern County district attorney’s office for Assistant District Attorney Scott Spielman.
Spielman confirms he is leaving the position for a job in the Tulare County district attorney’s office as a supervising prosecutor. Spielman was defeated in the race for DA in June by Cynthia Zimmer.
Spielman started his legal career at the Kern County district attorney’s office 25 years ago. That’s where he met his wife, Stephanie who was also a prosecutor. The two started their family and made Bakersfield home.
Spielman says one of his most memorable cases was the conviction of Elmo Williams. Williams was convicted of sexually assaulting and strangling a homeless woman.
He also helped create several programs in the DA’s office, including a Victim Services Unit and Veterans Justice Program.
Spielman says while he is leaving the Kern County DA’s office, he is not leaving Bakersfield as he plans to commute. He begins his new job in three weeks.
Zimmer is set to take office Jan. 7.
