Fifth graders from Ramon Garza Elementary School got a hands-on-approach at AERA Energy Academy on the oil industry Wednesday morning.
Students worked closely with ambassadors from the company for a closer look at how Kern County produces two-thirds of California’s oil.
AERA’s director of public affairs, Cindy Pollard says the children were able to see the connection between oil and everyday items.
“They’re learning how to drill from oil and they’re getting an opportunity to learn how oil is a part of their every day lives,” Pollard said.
“Growing up here in Kern County, I’m sure they’ve seen the pumping units sometimes in the parking lots around town, or out on the highway if they’ve driven out of town, but i think very few students make the connection between those pumping units and most of the things that they touch on a daily basis.”
About 150 fifth graders attended the event.
