Proposed police academy site tests positive for asbestos, lead

News

Plans to turn an old restaurant into a police training facility have hit a snag.

As 17 News reported, the Bakersfield Police Department wants to create a police academy at what used to be Casa Tequila Bar & Grill on California Avenue.

The floor covering at the restaurant tested positive for asbestos and lead, however. An outside contractor is needed to abate those chemicals, before the remodeling can begin.

To do that, the city will skip the bidding process for an emergency abatement as soon as possible.
