Bakersfield police said Wednesday the man shot and killed by officers Sunday night was in possession of a pellet gun when officers opened fire.
Police said in a statement, Christopher Okamoto, 21, was in possession of a Umarex H&K .177 pellet pistol with features that made it appear identical to an H&K semiautomatic firearm.
Police add the CO2-powered weapon did not have visible features distinguishing it from an actual firearm.
The department also identified the officer as Sr. Officer Alejandro Patino. Patino has been with the department since January 2007.
Patino will remain on paid administrative leave pending a review by the department’s Critical Incident Review Board.
