As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness month, the community came together to help three people whose lives have been touched by cancer.
The People Helping People organization raised $10,000 at their annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser–collected from more than 400 contributors. Each year, they usually donate the money to an organization, but this year they decided on three people affected by cancer who struggle to afford care.
Piedad Reynaga was diagnosed with breast cancer in December. Michelle Battles started chemotherapy one month ago. Milagros Garcia’s baby daughter passed away after a year-long fight with leukemia.
All three struggle to pay mounting medical bills–but they will now each receive $3,333.
“We picked three local families to help because either they lost somebody to cancer or they’re going through the struggle of cancer right now,” said PHP’s Erika del Toro.
As the women walked into the event room, the ladies had no idea how much was going to be presented to them. Unfortunately, Michelle Battles couldn’t be there in person to receive the gift after a long day of chemo.
“I just found out that one of the families–they’re sleeping in the car. So can you only imagine what a big difference this is going to help,” del Toro said.
PHP will also donate an additional $2,000 to the American Cancer Society.
