Update (May 30) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the man killed Saturday night on New Stine Road and Belle Terrace as 55-year-old James Earl Posey Jr. of Bakersfield.


BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man already lying in the roadway at New Stine Road and Belle Terrace was struck by a vehicle and later died Saturday night, according to Bakersfield police.

Emergency crews were called to New Stine Road and Belle Terrace for a report of a collision at around 8:45 p.m. A man was found suffering major injuries and was taken to a hospital where he later died. The driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the collision, the department said.

According to police, their preliminary investigation showed the man who died was already down in the roadway before the collision.

The pedestrian will be identified by the Kern County Coroner’s Office at a later time.
