A parolee arrested after a deadly pursuit in Bakersfield made a court appearance Friday morning.

Gavino Castro pleaded not guilty to several felonies.

Police arrested Castro on Tuesday at the intersection of East Brundage Lane and Oswell Street.

Details of what happened before and during the arrest are unclear, but investigators say shots were fired at a nearby Motel 6.

A car chase followed, and Castro’s vehicle ended up crashing at the intersection.

A woman in the car, identified as Stephanie Quiroz, died.

The coroner’s office has not determined if she was shot or if she died from the crash.

Castro’s brother, Rolando, was also arrested, but was released after posting bail.
