Attorneys presented their opening arguments Friday in the trial of a man suspected of driving under the influence causing a crash that killed a local teacher and her unborn baby.
Gabby Soto died in the crash on Santa Fe Way in Shafter in June 2017. Soto was seven months pregnant at the time of the crash.
Prosecutors say Soto was on her way home from teaching summer school when she was hit by John Hernandez who was suspected of being under the influence of marijuana.
The defense argues there is no direct measure to determine if Hernandez was impaired.
Hernandez is charged with vehicular manslaughter DUI with gross negligence.
