One of three men accused of beating a man to death in Bakersfield pleaded not guilty to a judge Monday afternoon.
Bakersfield police say Nathaniel Mayfield was involved in the murder of Sergio Mendoza of Bakersfield.
The alleged attack happened on July 11 on 19th Street.
Mayfield, Steven Buckner and Timon Everidge are suspected of repeatedly beating Mendoza.
According to court documents obtained by 17 News Monday, police say Mendoza and the three men had previously been involved in an altercation weeks before the deadly stabbing.
The documents reveal in the early hours of July 11, Mendoza was chased down by Mayfield, Buckner and Everidge and then was beaten by the three men. According to police, Buckner and Mayfield told investigators Everidge stabbed Mendoza.
The documents also state, Mayfield returned the scene “to check on [Mendoza.]” When Mayfield realized Mendoza appeared to be dead, police say, Mayfield fled from the scene.
Everidge and Buckner are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
Police said they are searching for more witnesses to the attack. If you have any information, you’re asked to call police at 327-7111.
