Local oil companies are teaming up with the Golden Empire Gleaners to help fight hunger in Kern County through the Oil Can Do It Food Drive.
The kickoff event runs from 5:30 a.m.-9 a.m. Thursday, June 7 at 9600 Ming Ave, just west of the Marketplace.
The public is invited contribute to the cause by donating non-perishable food items or making cash donations. Organizers will be serving $5 breakfast burritos.
Following the event June 7, the companies involved in the drive – Aera Energy, California Resources Corp., Chevron USA, and Energy API – will hold internal events to spur donations from employees until Aug. 31.
More than 225,000 pounds of food was raised during last year’s event, setting a new record, according to organizers. This year’s goal is more than 250,000 pounds.
Approximately 200,000 people, more than half of them children, are served by the Golden Empire Gleaners each year, organizers said.
