Kern County coroner identified the victim in a fatal crash over the weekend as Riley Anderson, 24, of Bakersfield.

Anderson died after sustaining major injuries in an apparent DUI crash off Highway 178 Saturday, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 178 and Masterson Street, about three miles west of Rio Bravo country club. A man driving a vehicle struck a traffic light at the intersection while traveling westbound on Highway 178, police said.

Both the driver and his female passenger, Anderson, were pinned in following the crash, and had to be pulled out by firefighters, police said.

The driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment, where he is listed in stable condition, according to police.

After this story was posted over the weekend, several family members reached out to KGET, claiming the driver fell asleep at the wheel. We have yet to confirm that with police.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and at this point it is believed alcohol and/or drug use may have been a factor, according to Bakersfield police.
