The Norris School District is made up of four elementary schools and a middle school, but come the 2020-2021 school year, the district will have a new addition.
“We’re happy to start this process and excited about the opportunity to grow with our community,” Administrator of District Support Services Darren Grisham said.
The new elementary will serve K through 6th graders and is set to open its doors on the corner of Verdugo Lane and Snow Road for the 2020-2021 school year.
“We’re in the initial design phases,” Grisham said. “We are working with our architects right now on the final aspects of planning. We have formed focus groups with all of the different groups in our district and we are working with them to get input on these designs and how we can best serve our students here.”
Once the building plans are complete, administrators say they will discuss things like school colors and the mascot. As for the name …
“We have discussed a few names, but we really want to get some input from a lot of different people, our board, our community,” Grisham said. “We want this to be a name that has a real tradition here in the Norris School District, so we are taking our time to choose what that name will be.”
The school will bring about 30 new teaching jobs as well as administrative and custodial positions.
Administrators are expecting about 750 students at the school’s capacity.
Sixth grade teacher at Veterans Elementary School, Ashley Hunsaker, is part of the focus group helping to plan the new school. She said she is excited to expand what she calls a family.
“It’s just an exciting thing,” Hunsaker said. “Being a part of a new campus and setting up a new, like a new norm, a new community, a new environment for the kids to be a part of. It’s just a really fun thing to get to be apart of that and start a new tradition.”
The last time Norris School District added a new school was Veterans Elementary in 2007.
Administrators say they plan to break ground on the new school January 2019.
