A Kern Valley State Prison inmate was stabbed to death in his own cell, according to a newly released statement from the county coroner’s office.

Richard Ruse, 51, was found dead, with multiple stab wounds, in his cell around 8 a.m. May 24.

Mathew Johnson, 29, was seen running into Ruse’s cell before the killing and had to be pepper sprayed to get him off of Ruse, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.

Ruse was taken to a hospital in Delano, where he was pronounced dead.

Both men were serving life sentences for murder convictions.
