Motorcyclist killed in Union Avenue and Taft Highway crash

UPDATE (4:36 p.m.): The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the motorcyclist killed in a Saturday collision as Ryan Christian Valdez of Bakersfield.

Previous story:

A motorcyclist died after a collision with a truck just after 11 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of S. Union Avenue and Taft Highway according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers said the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on Union Avenue toward Taft Highway at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, a driver in a truck was traveling eastbound on Taft Highway toward Union Avenue. 

CHP said the two collided in the intersection, ejecting the motorcyclist and overturning the truck. 

The driver of the truck, identified as 57-year-old Gerardo Carranza, was not injured.

The identity of the motorcyclist will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.

CHP is still investigating the cause, who was at fault in the collision and whether or not alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
