Mother speaks about suspected child abuse death investigation

Police suspect child abuse in the death of a Ridgecrest toddler. Officers arrested the toddler’s mother, Jordan Whitehead, 19, on suspicion of child abuse, but she hasn’t been charged. Whitehead spoke with 17 News about what she says happened that night.

Aydan Whitehead-McGowen would’ve been 2 years old this month. The toddler died less than a month before the milestone.

Whitehead said she found her son facedown in the bathtub.

She said, “Due to the fact that I don’t know infant CPR I was doing regular CPR and it wasn’t working I started to panic and my mind started to shut down.”

Whitehead says she called 9-1-1 about 30 minutes later.

Investigators said the toddler had severe bruising and organ injuries.

According to court records Whitehead and Aydan’s father, Joshua McGowen have been convicted of child abuse in the past. But Whitehead said she didn’t cause her son’s death.

Whitehead said, “It was an accident. Accidents happen. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in jail for something I didn’t do.”

The couple has a second, younger son, who was taken into protective custody. Aydan’s death remains under investigation.
