Mother, boyfriend accused of murdering her 2-year-old son

Bakersfield police arrested a teenage mother, booking her on a charge of murder for the death of her 2-year-old son, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Ayled Chavez, 19, was arrested just after 5:45 p.m. Thursday and booked on charges of murder, felony child abuse, and conspiracy. The arrest came after investigators found the body of a young boy in the Kern River Canyon.

Police are still searching for Chavez’s boyfriend, Kaleb Kessinger, 20, who led police on a vehicle chase Wednesday night before crashing his vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot, according to BPD. Kessinger is also wanted for murder.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Bakersfield police said they located the body of a “young boy,” but police did not provide an identity of the body.

Police said they found the body on a trail near Democrat Hot Springs.

Police began to investigate the disappearance of Ramon Angel Reyes-Chavez around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday. Police said they spoke with the mother of the 2-year-old at a home on Radicchio Avenue. During the investigation, detectives developed information leading them to believe that Reyes-Chavez was the victim of a homicide, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Detectives identified Kaleb Kessinger, 20, as a suspect in this case, and attempted to contact him in the 3400 block of Nighthawk Lane in Northwest Bakersfield at around 10:30 Wednesday, police say. Officers located Kessinger on Wednesday night at about 10:45 p.m. driving his car on Nighthawk Lane, according to police.

Kessinger fled from officers and was involved in a single-vehicle traffic collision near Calloway Drive and Olive Drive. 17 News reported heavy police presence at the time of the crash but Bakersfield Police Department could not release any information at the time.

At the press conference Thursday, police said Kessinger was the boyfriend of the mother of the Reyes-Chavez, but not the boy’s biological father.

Kessinger was last seen fleeing on foot from that area, police say. Detectives have obtained an arrest warrant for Kessinger for charges which include homicide and felony child abuse. Police said they do not know if Kessinger is armed.

Kessinger is described as:

  • Blonde Hair
  • Green Eyes
  • 6’ 02″
  • 198 Lbs

Investigators are continuing their search for Ramon Reyes-Chavez and are asking the public to contact the Bakersfield Police Department 661-327-7111 with any information regarding this case or the whereabouts of Reyes-Chavez or Kessinger.
