A man trapped four women inside a fireworks booth while another man stole $600 in fireworks, according to booth operators.

The theft occurred just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at a booth at Olive Drive and Roberts Lane operated by Victory Outreach Southwest Bakersfield church.

Four women – running the booth for the church – were helping four men at the fireworks booth, when one of those men ran off with the booth’s most expensive package of fireworks, witnesses said.

When the women tried to pursue the thief, another one of the men held the door shut, refusing to let them out, before all four men jumped into a brown Chevrolet Tahoe and left.

“I don’t wish them the worst or anything,” Alexis Huizar said. “It sucks that people are like that. You know, I’m praying for them. Hopefully they don’t do that again, and I hope they have a blessed Fourth of July with those fireworks.”

Despite the theft, the booth will remain open until 10 p.m. Wednesday, or until the church runs out of fireworks, church representatives said.
