A man suspected in a robbery in East Bakersfield surrendered to Kern County Sheriff’s SWAT deputies following an hours-long standoff after barricading himself in his own apartment.

The sheriff’s office identified the man who surrendered as 20-year-old Hiram Salcedo.

The sheriff’s office said it all began at around 1:20 p.m. following a robbery at a recycling center at 401 Fairfax Road. Officials said, witnesses followed the man to an apartment complex in the 6600 block of Guiness Way where the standoff began.

Lt. Bill Smallwood said the man was a resident of the apartment complex and barricaded himself inside his home.

Sheriff’s officials said a weapon recovered at the scene, suspected to have been used in the recycling center robbery, was a BB gun.

The sheriff’s office said negotiators were unable to make contact with the man, but did say the man’s family had been in contact with him.

Salcedo was arrested for armed robbery.

Salcedo has also had numerous run-ins with the law. According to Kern County court records, Salcedo’s criminal record dates back to 2016 when he turned 18 years old.

Most recently, according to KCSO arrest logs, Salcedo was taken into custody by law enforcement on Sept. 16.
