A man was taken to the hospital overnight after he was hit by a car while trying to cross Union Avenue.
The accident happened around 8:00 p.m., between 18th and 19th Streets.
The man was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash, according to Bakersfield Police Department. He was hospitalized with serious injuries and is in critical condition.
At the scene of the crash, Sergeant William Hughes told 17 News, despite a huge enforcement effort on pedestrian safety, Union Avenue has seen the most pedestrian fatalities.
“We’re down here daily citing folks for the violation, said Hughes. “We’re also citing vehicles for failure to yield to the pedestrian that’s already in the roadway. But, by far one of our biggest issues here is the pedestrians failing to heed the crosswalk as aiding them to cross the street.”
The driver and her passengers were not injured.
The crash is under investigation, but police don’t believe alcohol and drugs appear to be a factor.
