A man was hospitalized with what officials referred to as moderate-to-major injuries after being hit by a train in South Bakersfield.

The 43-year-old man was struck by the train just before noon Sunday near the intersection of S. Union Avenue and Wilson Road, according to the Bakersfield Fire Department.

County and city fire, as well as Bakersfield police and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the incident.

When officials arrived, the man was stuck beneath the wheels of the train, but rescue crews were able to free him.

The conductor of the train told officials he saw the man on the tracks and repeatedly tried to warn him to get out of the way, but the man ignored him.

The conductor said he tried to stop the train, but was unable to do so in time, according to the fire department.

The identity of the man who was struck by the train has not been released.
