On Wednesday just before midnight, Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies and homicide detectives responded to a man down.

Homicide detectives initially investigated the incident because the man’s wounds were so severe, according to California Highway Patrol.

Several hours into the investigation, KCSO determined the injuries sustained were traffic-related.

California Highway Patrol took over the investigation around 3:30 a.m. CHP officers determined the bicyclist was traveling south on County Club Drive at an unknown speed when he collided into a concrete sidewalk east of the road, sustaining fatal injuries.

CHP could not tell 17 News if Cepeda was wearing a helmet or bright colors at the time of the crash.
