A man is in custody, charged with gun and traffic violations, after leading police on a dangerous chase in Southeast Bakersfield.

Billy Tilford, 32, was taken into custody without incident Monday night for traffic violations, gun charges and participating in a criminal street gang.

Bakersfield Police Department tried to stop a vehicle he was driving around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Union Avenue and E. 4th Street.

His car did not stop, leading police on a car chase, according to police. Officers called off the chase due to Tilford’s reckless driving.

A short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned.

An investigation led police to a home on Augusta Street, just four blocks west of Fremont Elementary School. At the home, Tilford gave over this loaded handgun to officers and was taken into custody.
