Man accused of causing fatal crash on Highway 43 pleads not guilty

A man previously convicted on DUI charges pleaded not guilty to causing a crash that killed two people in Shafter. 

Steven Flores Garza is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter for the crash that happened June 26 on Highway 43 and Burbank Street. 

Isaiah Jacob Sanchez and Emilio Junior Mendoza, passengers in another vehicle, were killed in the crash. 

Garza pleaded no contest to DUI charges last year, according to court records. 

He was sentenced to 120 days in jail and five years probation.
