Man accused in shooting, killing outside elementary school pleads no contest


A man has pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a deadly shooting outside a Northeast Bakersfield elementary school. 

The shooting happened in February 2017 on Lincoln and King streets just in front of Jefferson Elementary School.

Police say Luis Alberto Ortega-Romero was told that his car was being vandalized.

Police say Ortega-Romero confronted Ernesto Venegas and the two had an altercation resulting in Venegas getting shot multiple times. Venegas died at the scene

Ortega-Romero was charged with voluntary manslaughter and pleaded no contest to the charge Wednesday.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 7.
