Local World War II veteran, Robert Valenzuela, dies at 89

Kern County lost a veteran of World War II, and next Friday, he’ll be laid to rest.

Bakersfield veteran Robert Valenzuela died at the age of 89.

Valenzuela’s family tells 17 News he served in several conflicts — including World War II — as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division.

His daughter Corrine said her dad was a busy man with a sharp attention to detail working as an all-around organizer.

“He handled six veterans organizations. He was the treasurer, secretary, bookeeper. In those days, when someone passed away, he handled all that stuff. The 21 gun salute, everything,” Corrine said.

Funeral services are set for Friday, Feb. 16 starting at 10 a.m. At St. Joseph’s church followed by a burial at Greenlawn Cemetery on Panorama Drive.

Finally, a memorial will be held at the Veterans Hall on Chester Drive to honor Valenzuela’s life and service.
