She says she wants to see every child have a chance for a sweet life, now one local teen is the governor’s Volunteer of the Year.

“I cannot put into word how honored I am to receive this award,” Emily Aldritt said. “Being only 17 and being in a room with such wonderful, amazing people and being at the state capitol … It’s unreal.”

Aldritt started Em’s Treat’em Sweet back in 2011 when she was 11 years old.

It’s raised more than $35,000 for the Bakersfield Homeless Center and Alliance Against Family Violence.

With three of her friends this year, Aldritt started boxes of comfort, spreading love and support to mothers with babies in the NICU at local Bakersfield hospitals.
