BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield police are investigating for DUI after a driver collided into a gas pump and post, sending part of a gas station awning crashing down below.

Police said the crash happened at around 6:45 p.m. at a Valero gas station at the corner of California and Union Avenue.

Officials say the driver of a GMC Yukon was going the wrong way on East California Avenue when he turned onto Union Avenue, lost control and crashed into the gas pump and awning support post. A gas station clerk quickly shut off a gas pump preventing a gas spill, according to police. Alcohol or drugs appear to be factors in the crash Bakersfield police Lt. Jason Townsend said.

The driver was the only one injured in the crash and awning collapse, and was taken to Kern Medical for evaluation. The department is investigating for DUI.
