BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — With the winter storm sweeping through Kern County, severe weather conditions have created potentially dangerous driving conditions around the county.
The first of two storms has passed and a second is on its way, 17’s Kevin Charette says.
CHP reported more snow falling in the Tehachapi area at around 3:15 p.m. The highway patrol is escorting traffic on Highway 58 between Highway 223 and Highway 14 due to snow, according to Caltrans.
Northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 over the Grapevine remain open, according to CHP Fort Tejon. There is a possibility CHP units will escort traffic over the Tejon pass Thursday. Officials stress there is no way to “predict” when or if a road will close, but to instead pay attention to road conditions before traveling. It could be best to avoid travel altogether.
A decision to close a road is based on factors including visibility, road conditions, and weather impacting the roadway like snow, ice, wind or fog, Caltrans said.
Highway 58 over the Tehachapi Pass fully reopened to traffic Thursday morning, CHP said.
In Los Angeles County along I-5, CHP reported moderate snow just north of Templin Highway at around 7:30 p.m.
