UPDATE: Southern California Edison said as of 11:45 a.m. a total of 12,900 of its customers were without power, including 5,369 in Kern County.
KERN COUNTY, Calif. (KGET) — PG&E announced Thursday it will begin shutting off power to 4,000 Kern residents beginning at 10 a.m.
The utility is cutting power to hundreds of thousands of residents statewide as a result of a dry, windy weather pattern leading to an elevated fire risk.

PG&E said earlier in the week more than 40,000 people could potentially be impacted, but drastically reduced that number during a press conference Wednesday evening.
