UPDATE: The courthouse is expected to reopen at 1 p.m.

The suspicious item was safely rendered by sheriff’s bomb squad, Chief of Shafter Police Kevin Zimmermann said.

SHAFTER, Calif. (KGET) — The sheriff’s Bomb Squad is by the courthouse due to a report of a suspicious item and businesses in the area have been evacuated as the investigation continues.

A two-block radius in the area of Sunset Acres and Central Valley Highway has been closed off, authorities said.

The Bomb Squad has been there since around 9:30 a.m., sheriff’s officials said.

Officials are investigating the scene.
