Bakersfield, Calif. (KGET) — The California Highway Patrol is investigating a major-injury crash involving a pedestrian in Oildale who was struck in a crosswalk.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. as the pedestrian, a juvenile, walked south on Norris Road at Ray Street. A vehicle traveling west on Norris hit the juvenile, Officer Robert Rodriguez said.
The juvenile received major injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Rodriguez said the juvenile was walking in a crosswalk when was hit. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.
“The pedestrian was in a crosswalk while crossing the street so the onus is on the driver of that vehicle to stop,” Rodriguez said.
He urged motorists to stay alert and be aware of crosswalks and traffic signs. Pedestrians also need to be careful, he said, and look in both directions while crossing for drivers who may be distracted.
As CHP investigated the incident, another crash occurred when a motorist, failing to see traffic had stopped, rear-ended another vehicle. Rodriguez said three vehicles were involved and minor injuries reported.
