BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 178 through the canyon remains closed Friday morning after a second rockslide on Wednesday forced the highway’s closure.

Caltrans said a crew was expected to be in the canyon Friday morning to continue work on blasting rocks apart and clearing them from the road.

The road was closed at around 11:45 a.m. on March 15, according to CHP’s Traffic Incident Information Page. The highway into the Kern River Valley remained closed on Friday morning.

Caltrans District 6 crews were unable to remove two large boulders on Wednesday, according to a tweet. A blasting crew was in Fresno County working to clear Highway 180 on Thursday delaying work in Kern County.

The canyon was briefly reopened for about an hour Wednesday after an early morning rockslide.
