High Fitness brings a new twist to an old fitness trend

February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on heart health. One of the key components to keeping your ticker in tip-top shape, is exercise. Yet the vast majority of Americans don’t get the recommended amount. One of the top reasons people don’t work out, is they just don’t enjoy exercise. So all month long we are featuring different types of workouts to show there really is something for everyone, and fitness can be fun!

Several nights a week, at different locations around Bakersfield, you can find a packed group-fitness class, loud music and choreographed moves. It’s something called High Fitness. It might remind your of a popular fitness craze of the 80’s and 90’s with instructors in colorful leg warmers and sweatbands, and you’d be right. It’s a new spin on aerobics. Jacque NanOrman, an instructor, says when she took her first High Fitness class, she knew she had to get certified. She’s now been teaching for two-and-a-half years. “It mixes aerobics, and mixes it with new techniques and modern techniques, so we have HIIT. And it’s all choreographed to music that we know and that we love. So we have Ariana Grande and throwbacks like N’Sync and Justin Beiber and AC/DC. So you’re trying to sing while you’re working out, but we’re throwing in burpees and jumping jacks and tuck jumps. But it’s all easy to follow.”

Participants can be seen smiling through the workout. But don’t let that fool you, they’re still getting a great workout. Jessica Livingston says, “It’s so much fun that you don’t even realize you are working out.”  “The music makes you feel like you’re dancing,” says Avery Ontiveros. “I love that I have so much fun with all of my friends. We get together, we support each other, I just love it. It’s just different,” says Lourdes Bucher.

There are now nine instructors in the Bakersfield area, including one in Tehachapi, and they hold the classes at different gyms around town. Classes vary on  times and locations, you can follow them at High Fitness Bakersfield, or Tehachapi, on Instagram and Facebook for details.
